Updated: Haldimand County declares Significant Weather Event effective 4 p.m. January 27
Update - January 28, 4:40 p.m.
Significant Weather Event declaration remains in effect; residents still advised to avoid the area
Haldimand County’s Significant Weather Event remains in effect as crews continue to manage rapidly changing conditions along the lakeshore area.
Crews made progress throughout the day; however, shifting weather and renewed drifting have created unpredictable conditions, and vehicles continue to get stuck. This is slowing snow‑clearing efforts as crews work to tow or dig out stranded motorists.
While routes are passable, conditions vary across the area and can change quickly with little warning. Residents are asked to avoid non‑essential travel through the area to reduce the chance of getting stuck and allow crews to work safely and efficiently.
County staff will continue monitoring conditions closely and will provide updates as they become available.
Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as crews work to respond to this challenging and evolving weather situation.
Update - January 28, 9:50 a.m.
Most north‑south access routes to the lakeshore area are now passable. Crews are actively working to reopen Lakeshore Road later today; however, it remains closed at this time, and travel in the area is still strongly discouraged.
After all roads reopen, staff will continue working in the area over the next several days to clear remaining drifting and clean up affected roadways.
Vehicles that were towed during this weather event are available for pickup at the Kohler Yard (1162 Kohler Road).
The Significant Weather Event declaration remains in effect. Thank you for your continued patience as crews work to safely restore access.
7:30 p.m. Update:
Snow clearing efforts continue along the lakeshore. Crews are making progress on main roads and will be working through the night to maintain access, however, residents should continue to avoid all travel in the area so plows can work unobstructed. Residents who live in the impacted area should plan accordingly for a longer commute tomorrow and use their best judgement before using the roads.
Crews will continue to monitor conditions and work to reopen the roads. The Significant Weather Event declaration and road closures will remain in effect until further notice.
We appreciate your patience as we work to tackle this challenging snowfall event.
Haldimand County is declaring another Significant Weather Event as a result of blowing snow and white out conditions resulting from high winds. This declaration takes effect 4 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2026 and will remain in effect until further notice.
The area most significantly impacted is bounded by Highway 3 in the north, the lakeshore in the south and extends from Nanticoke in the west to Lowbanks in the east. This area is experiencing significant drifting snow, making many roads impassable. Residents and other motorists are strongly discouraged from travelling in this area, and asked to avoid travel in this zone until further notice. Emergency services will be unable to respond quickly in this zone until conditions improve. The status of the significant weather event will be re-evaluated tomorrow. Updates will be provided as they become available.
