Temporary pause on tire acceptance at Canborough Waste Management Facility

Effective July 30, 2026, the Canborough Waste Management Facility (CWMF) will temporarily stop accepting tires until further notice.

The restriction applies to all tires, including residential, commercial, agricultural, and other tire types.

Under Ontario’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework, Haldimand County participates in the provincial tire recycling system through a Producer Responsibility Organization that coordinates the collection, transportation and processing of end-of-life tires. In recent months, municipalities across Ontario have experienced delays in tire collection, creating a growing backlog within the provincial system.

As a result of these collection delays, tire inventories at CWMF have continued to grow, limiting available storage capacity at the site. To protect public safety, maintain regulatory compliance, and support continued operations at the facility, the County must temporarily pause tire acceptance while awaiting collection of existing tires.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to store tires, if possible, until regular operations resume. Alternative recycling locations may also be found using the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority’s (RPRA) Where to Recycle tool at rpra.ca/where-to-recycle. Users should contact locations in advance to confirm acceptance policies.

County staff are actively working with tire collection partners to clear the current inventory and appreciate the community’s cooperation while the provincial backlog is addressed.
