Success Stories: The Social Coffeehouse and Market

Ken and Sue Hoover - Building Community Through Coffee, Cuisine and Connection

In the heart of Selkirk, Ontario, there's more than just great coffee and home-style meals; you'll find community. At the center of it all are Ken and Sue Hoover, the passionate pair behind one of the town’s most welcoming spots: the Social Coffee House and Market. More than just a restaurant, it’s a gathering place where neighbours meet, stories are shared, and everyone feels at home.

Their journey began with a simple, heartfelt vision: to create a cozy spot where locals could connect. “We wanted to add to our little community a spot they could go and meet up, enjoy good food and drink, and support local vendors,” says Sue. And so, through many late-night brainstorming sessions and thoughtful feedback from friends and neighbours, their concept took shape.

Starting wasn’t easy. As newcomers to the restaurant industry, they faced a steep learning curve, juggling renovations, equipment costs, and building a business from the ground up. But what they lacked in experience, they made up for in grit, community spirit, and a willingness to learn on the go.

From day one, the town rallied around them. “Being in a small town, word of mouth travels fast,” Ken says. That local support helped them evolve quickly from a simple café into a full-service restaurant with an expanded menu and a licensed dining area.

What sets their business apart? It’s not just the hearty breakfasts, delicious lunches, and comforting dinners. Inside their restaurant is a unique vendor market, filled with locally made products, providing local artisans a space to showcase their work while customers shop and dine. “People love the atmosphere. It’s cozy, it’s convenient, and everything feels homemade,” Sue shares.

Their support for the community goes far beyond their walls. They've collaborated with fellow local businesses, shared platforms with vendors whose values align with theirs, and remained committed members of the Selkirk Chamber of Commerce.

The post-COVID landscape brought its challenges, but the loyalty of the Selkirk community helped carry Ken and Sue Hoover through, even during the slow months. “Just seeing the business stay steady in the off-season means a lot to us,” Ken says. Among their proudest achievements? Keeping the doors open, expanding services, and building a loyal customer base in a tough industry. “The biggest lesson we’ve learned is to keep changing and keep going, even when things get tough.”

Their advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is grounded in experience. “Make sure it’s what you want to do,” Sue advises. “It’s hard work. You’ve got to be ready to pivot all the time.” With passion, grit, and the unwavering support of their community, Ken and Sue have shown that a small dream, fueled by heart, can grow into something truly meaningful.
