Farming is more than a career, its a way of life!
On the south end of Haldimand County, between Lake Erie and the Grand River, Kevin Vanderspek has built a life around farming. For nearly 20 years, he has grown corn, wheat, and soybeans, along with alfalfa for local horse owners.
During his time in agriculture, Kevin has witnessed significant changes in the industry. Technology has become an important part of modern farming, helping producers work more efficiently, accurately, and sustainably. On Kevin’s farm, GPS-guided equipment is used for fieldwork and planting, allowing crops to be planted with exceptional precision and making the most of every acre.
Farming is a year-round commitment. Spring is focused on planting, summer brings crop care, tractor work and maintenance, and fall is dedicated to harvest. Winter provides time to repair equipment, complete maintenance, and prepare for the next growing season. Kevin also helps a neighbouring dairy farmer with morning milking, adding another connection to the agricultural community around him.
Like farmers across the region, Kevin faces challenges including rising input costs, increasing land prices, and the cost of maintaining and investing in infrastructure. Despite these pressures, agriculture continues to provide a sustainable livelihood and remains an important part of Haldimand County’s economy and identity.
