John Edelman
"If you look at what is beneficial for the next person, then it will come back full circle in the end."
In Haldimand County, John Edelman and his former business, Haldimand Motors, are household names. Onlookers may assume John’s notoriety comes from his success as an entrepreneur, which is impressive to say the least, but what makes him really stand out is his commitment to family, volunteering, and his community.
The Cayuga native was only 16 when he bought his first property and began flipping homes as a full-time job. His entrepreneurial spirit became so consuming that he didn’t finish high school until later in his life. Edelman continued down this path for the next few years, and then at 22, he saw an opportunity, and Haldimand Motors was born. Now, nearly 40 years later, John has worn many hats in Cayuga, as a developer, property owner, and business owner.
John also values networking in his community. He states that “getting to know the right people is the key to success in a small town business.” And that, "many business owners overlook this, but I encourage all new entrepreneurs to network and get involved.”
Edelman’s top priority is investing in his community, and he takes pride in leaving behind a legacy in the place that he calls home. This is of particular interest as he has 4 children in business, and his grandchildren are all in the community. John is involved in many committees, councils, and charities, and plays a role in the majority of business events in Cayuga. Edelman also hosts major events of his own, such as The Great Tricycle Race, which has taken place for over two decades annually, and benefits charity.
When asked about his passion for volunteering, Edelman explained, “If you look at what is beneficial for the next person, then it will come back full circle in the end.” At this stage in his career, John’s focus is on being a role model for the next generation and teaching them about the importance of the entrepreneurial spirit, family, and community. We can’t wait to see which projects John takes on next, and how he will continue to positively contribute to the community he grew up in and has dedicated his life to supporting.
