Spring tree-planting underway on municipal rights-of-way

Crews have begun their spring street-tree planting on municipal rights-of-way as part of our continuing commitment to a greener, healthier, and more beautiful Haldimand County. Planting is rotated throughout the municipality each year, depending on priority and need, under the guidance of our Forest Strategy and Management Plan. Areas identified for this year's planting include Cayuga, Caledonia, Hagersville, and Jarvis.

The planting season typically runs from mid-April to the end of May.

Why we plant

A commitment to increasing the number of street trees throughout Haldimand enhances the urban forest, bringing numerous long-term health and economic benefits to our neighbourhoods and residents:

  • Cleaner air by reducing dust and road pollutants
  • Stormwater interception, reducing property and basement flooding
  • Increased shade, reducing heating and cooling costs
  • Increased privacy and property value

Planting process

The trees included in each year’s planting are a mix of native, Carolinian and non-native but non-invasive species chosen based on the requirements of the planting locations.

Each planted tree follows an established process:

  1. The planting location is assessed to ensure the right tree is placed in the right spot with attention given to soil, water and light availability, visibility, and proximity to existing infrastructure

  1. Tree locations are marked out using pink flags and ground paint in preparation for planting

  1. Once planted, our contractor will water the tree every other week from June to September for two years after planting

  1. At the end of two years, the contractor will remove the stakes, ties, and watering bags

  1. Haldimand staff then take over the tree’s care and maintenance, managing inspections, pruning, and any replacements or removals for the life of the tree.

Residents who have questions or concerns about our tree-planting program, or a tree planned for a location near their property, can contact our forestry division by email or by phone at (905) 318-5932, ext. 6503.

Requesting a street tree

Residents can also request that a new street tree be planted on municipal property in front of or beside their house. Trees must be selected from an approved list, and requests will be selected based on tree availability and site suitability. Requests need to be made by December for the following year.
