Share your thoughts on the proposed options for the Jarvis intersection at Main Street and Talbot Street

Both the 2019 Jarvis Master Servicing Study and the recent Traffic Management Strategy identified the need for improvements to the Talbot Street and Main Street intersection in Jarvis to address the growing traffic volume. As the volume grows, the potential for traffic backups, delays, and vehicle accidents increases.

The highest level of traffic improvement for the intersection would be upgrading the traffic signals (improved timing and vehicle detection) and adding turning lanes on both Main Street and Talbot Street. However, with limited road space at the intersection, added turn lanes would require re-purposing some of the road area currently used for on-street parking.

As a result, staff have developed 3 potential options for the intersection with varying levels of impact.

How to get involved

We want to hear from you on the 3 proposed options for the intersection. Review the details of each option and let us know which option you would prefer. Staff will bring this feedback to Council in the fall to help inform a decision.

The survey will be open until Friday, August 15, 2025.

Summary of the 3 options

Summary of options for Main/Talbot intersection

Proposed action

Traffic Impact

Option #1 – Upgrade traffic signals and add turning lanes for both Main St and Talbot St

Provides significant traffic improvements and requires the removal of 14 parking spaces.

Option #2 – Upgrade traffic signals and add turning lanes for Talbot St only

Provides partial traffic improvements and requires the removal of 8 parking spaces.

Option #3 – Upgrade traffic signals only (no turning lanes)

Provides minimal traffic improvements and maintains the current parking and streetscape.

Pros and cons

Includes a 20-metre loading zone on Main Street North set back from the intersection to accommodate deliveries.

Pros and cons of Option 1
Pros Cons

Improved traffic flow on Talbot Street and Main Street

  • Fewer delays from traffic backups
  • Eliminates the need to swerve around turning vehicles

Enhanced safety

  • Reduces the potential for rear-end collisions
  • Improves visibility for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians
  • Easier access for emergency vehicles

Supports growth

  • Can accommodate future traffic volumes as population grows

Loss of 14 curbside parking spaces

  • 7 on Talbot Street East
  • 1 on Talbot Street West
  • 4 on Main Street North
  • 2 on Main Street South

Pros and cons of Option 2
Pros Cons

Improved traffic flow on Talbot Street

  • Fewer delays from traffic backups on Talbot Street
  • Eliminates the need to swerve around turning vehicles

Enhanced safety

  • Reduces the potential for rear-end collisions on Talbot Street
  • Improves visibility for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians on Talbot Street
  • Easier access for emergency vehicles on Talbot Street

Supports growth

  • Can accommodate future traffic volumes on Talbot Street as population grows

Loss of 8 curbside parking spaces

  • 7 on Talbot Street East
  • 1 on Talbot Street West

Pros and cons of Option 3
Pros Cons

Minimally improved traffic flow through improved signal timing and vehicle detection.

Preserves all on-street parking

Continued traffic backups and delays

  • Fewer vehicles can move through the intersection per signal cycle
  • Higher level of driver frustration

No safety improvements

  • Higher potential for rear-end collisions
  • Higher potential for unsafe swerves around turning vehicles

Requires the need for future work

  • Without any improvements, intersection congestion will continue to be an issue and will need to be revisited in the near future.
