Selkirk Waterfront Way parkette officially opened

On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Members of Council and staff gathered at the new Selkirk Waterfront Way for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to recognize the official opening of the new parkette and trail connection.

Nestled at the end of Erie Street South along the lakeshore, the fully accessible Waterfront Way parkette offers beautiful views of Lake Erie and Selkirk Creek, picnic and rest areas, a bike repair station and a recreational pathway.

Discussions regarding the redevelopment of the popular lakefront parkette began in 2020 with the donation of a .06-hectare parcel of land on the west side of Erie Street South by landowners Glen Beaty and Shauna Kaminsky. The addition of this property connecting the lakefront parkette with the existing Waterfront Way trail expanded design possibilities for the location and allowed for the creation of a connecting pathway between the parkette and the trail head at Selkirk Creek.

The project was fully funded by $800,000 in Community Vibrancy Fund contributions split equally between two sitting councillors of the time – John Metcalfe (Ward 2) and Stewart Patterson (Ward 1).

“It’s amazing to see this project come to life and to have an accessible, lakefront space that residents and visitors can enjoy. This location has been waiting for rejuvenation for many years, and I’m so pleased to see that it can now be enjoyed. I’d like to think that Councillor Patterson (who passed away in 2024) would be very pleased, too,” said Ward 2 Councillor John Metcalfe.

“The new Selkirk Waterfront Way is an incredible addition to our community. It’s a welcoming, vibrant space where residents and visitors alike can get together, relax, and enjoy the natural beauty of our waterfront,” adds Haldimand County Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley. “Whether you’re a family out for a stroll, a cyclist passing through, or someone exploring our unique community, Waterfront Way offers a beautiful space to pause and connect.”
