The Opportunity
As a Roadway Maintenance Worker, you will help keep our community’s roads safe, reliable, and well-maintained. You will carry out roadway inspections, complete accurate documentation, and perform a variety of construction and maintenance tasks within the roadway allowance. You will operate trucks, equipment, and tools with care, ensuring all work is done safely and in compliance with County standards. Working closely with the Supervisor and Foreperson, you will play an important role in delivering quality results that residents and visitors can depend on every day.

Wage Range Hourly: $28.557 - $33.058
Position Status: Temporary full-time (until approximately April 15, 2026)
Work Hours: 40
Location: Various (Walpole Yard, Oneida Yard, Dunnville Yard or Cayuga Yard)

Position Summary
The Roadway Maintenance Workers will report to the Supervisor, Roads Operations and receive work guidance and direction from the Foreperson. The incumbent will complete roadway inspections and accurately complete all documentation relative to assigned jobs/tasks. They will perform various tasks related to construction and maintenance within the roadway allowance. They will also complete all work tasks in a manner that ensures compliance with the County and other legislated policies, procedures and standards for roadway maintenance and construction. Lastly, they will safely operate single or tandem trucks and other vehicles and equipment with or without attachments and/or various tools that are required to accomplish job tasks.
Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills
Education
- Grade 12 graduation plus an additional programme of up to one year*, or equivalent.
Experience
- Over one, up to and including two years current related experience and orientation, training and adjustment on the job itself.
Or equivalent to the above
*NOTE: Incumbents to this position are required to successfully complete courses relative to road construction, road maintenance such as those offered through T.J. Mahony School within an identified time period as a condition of employment. In addition, mandatory training will be provided for Ministry of Transportation Book 7.
Participation will be required in courses such as computer and safety training as required from time to time. Examples of this training are Chain Saw and WHMIS Training.
Knowledge/Skills
- Current valid DZ licence required coming into the position must be maintained in good standing
- Basic understanding of road construction and maintenance
- Proven ability to work independently or as a team member
- Proven communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to safely operate vehicles and equipment such as, but not limited to, the following:
- Single or tandem trucks with attachments such as salt and sand spreader, snow plow equipment
- 2 or 4 wheel drive front end loader
- Street sweeper
- Portable paint machine
- Tractor and attachments such as mower, front-mounted rotary broom, posthole auger
- Self-propelled roller
- Pickup truck
- Small equipment and hand tools such as chainsaw, truck jacks, air compressor and attachments, steam jenny, post hole auger, weed eaters, grinder, scythe, portable compactors, portable water pumps, portable hand sprayer, wood chipper
- Current First Aid and CPR required.
- Technology Aptitude
- Incumbents to this position must possess basic computer skills scored at 50% or higher to ensure their familiarity with computer/printer/mouse/Internet/e-mail.

Responsibilities
The incumbent is responsible for, but not limited to:
Functional
Vehicle Operation
- Operate trucks and various pieces of equipment, including towed equipment (as referenced above) performing various road maintenance job functions as assigned including but not limited to;
- Winter maintenance – roadway plowing and spreading, snow removal, road patrol, ice/slush removal, mailbox repair.
- Roadside Maintenance and Construction, sidewalks, sign replacement and sign maintenance, tree trimming and tree removal, brushing and chipping operations, debris removal, safety barrier restoration and repair.
- Drainage Maintenance, storm water management, culvert re/placement, ditching.
- Road Surface and Shoulder Maintenance, washout repairs, gravel resurfacing, hand patching.
Labouring Duties
- Operate various power and hand tools and performing various labouring duties as assigned including but not limited to;
- Roadside Maintenance, sidewalk restoration and repair, tree trimming and tree removal, brushing and chipping, mailbox repair, safety barrier restoration, grass mowing, lawn maintenance, laying/watering sod, planting seed, etc.
- Road Surface and Shoulder Maintenance, hand patching, re-surfacing, washout repairs, resurfacing, traffic control operations, sidewalk restoration/inspection.
- Drainage Maintenance, surveying grade elevation, catch basin cleaning and restoration, culvert placement, tile drains, gabion baskets, retaining walls.
- Shovelling and leveling various materials as required, aggregate, asphalt, snow, earth, salt, sand etc. Operating stationary power tools ie, water pumps, generators, compactors, concrete saws, chain saws, weed eaters, lawn mowers etc.

Position Requirement(s)
