Recycling program changes effective January 2026
Under provincial legislation, the responsibility for managing recyclables has been transitioning from municipalities to producers. In Haldimand, this transition began in 2024 and concludes at the end of this year, December 31, 2025. Circular Materials, the Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) overseeing recycling in Ontario, will then be solely responsible for all blue box recycling collection programs in Haldimand.
“Blue Box” recycling is an umbrella term for all the recyclable materials typically collected through curbside programs, such as cardboard, plastics, cans, etc. Other diversion programs, such as household hazardous waste events, leaf and yard waste collection, Christmas tree recycling, etc., are still managed by the County.
What stays the same
Curbside blue box collection will continue as usual for eligible properties (residential properties, schools, retirement homes, and long-term care facilities). You can continue to use your blue box as you do today.
Properties not eligible for curbside collection (industrial, commercial, and institutional properties) will continue managing their own recycling, as they have since 2024.
What’s changing
Recycling drop-off at the Canborough Waste Management Facility
The funding provided by producers to allow for recycling drop-off at the Canborough Waste Management Facility ends December 31, 2025, meaning the depot will no longer accept blue box recyclables (such as plastic, glass, cans, cardboard, etc.) after that date. This applies to all waste depot users, whether they receive curbside collection or not.
To help ease the transition, the County will extend recycling drop-off until January 31, 2026, giving residents and businesses extra time to make alternative arrangements if necessary.
What this means
- If you currently receive curbside collection for recycling: As of February 1, 2026, you must use that service for all blue box items, as they will not be accepted at the waste depot.
- If you do not receive curbside collection for recycling: If you haven’t already done so, as of February 1, 2026, you will need to explore alternative drop-off locations or private collection options for blue box items, as they will not be accepted at the waste depot.
New curbside collection contractor
Circular Materials has contracted Norfolk Disposal Services Ltd. to handle curbside recycling collection starting January 1, 2026, replacing Modern Landfill. As Norfolk Disposal Services Ltd. is also the County’s current contractor for curbside garbage collection, residents will be able to contact them for questions about both garbage and recycling.
Separate apps for garbage and recycling collection
Circular Materials has launched their own recycling app, which will now be where to find program information. Haldimand County will continue to utilize the current Recycle Coach app for waste-related programs, including garbage collection, household hazardous waste events, leaf and yard collection dates, and more.
For the most up-to-date information at your fingertips, download both apps to ensure you can see collection schedules and program updates for both garbage and recycling.
