Public Information Session - Legacy Oil and Gas Wells
Haldimand County, in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), invites the community to a Public Information Session to learn more about old or inactive oil and gas wells in Haldimand County.
Meeting Details:
Date: Tuesday, February 10th, 2026
Time: Doors open at 6:15 pm; Presentation begins at 6:30 pm
Location: McSorley Family Hall at the Cayuga Arena (55 Thorburn St S, Cayuga, N0A 1E0)
The information session will feature a presentation from the Ministry of Natural Resources, covering topics such as:
• History of legacy gas and oil wells in Southwestern Ontario
• Petroleum wells identification & tools available for landowners
• Public and environmental safety
• Responsibilities of landowners and provincial supports
• Ministry’s Legacy Wells Action Plan
The Haldimand County Fire Department will also provide information on the municipality’s response capabilities for oil and gas well incidents, supported through funding received from the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Residents who have a suspected, active, or abandoned well on their property may obtain a combination carbon monoxide and gas alarm free of charge from the Haldimand County Fire Department upon completion of a brief form. Information collected on the form will be used for responder safety and emergency response purposes only.
A question-and-answer session will be available, and staff will be onsite with resources to help residents in determining if a gas well may be on their property.
