Open Air Burning - Know the rules before you burn

HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON – As spring approaches, Haldimand County Fire Department is experiencing an increase in open-air burn violations. Residents are reminded to review and comply with all Open Air Burn By-Law requirements before conducting any burns.

Small recreational fires, such as campfires or fire pits used for enjoyment or warmth, are permitted only when conditions are safe. These fires must be small, supervised at all times, use clean, dry wood only, and meet all size and distance requirements in the By‑Law and do not require a permit.

Any burning for brush, yard waste, agricultural material, or debris is considered non‑recreational burning and requires a valid Burn Permit.

When obtaining a Non‑Recreational Burn Permit, the Permit Holder is responsible for reviewing and fully understanding all permit requirements before any burning begins. Acceptance of the permit confirms responsibility for following all conditions. Some requirements include but are not limited too

  • Fires must meet all size limits and required distances from buildings, property lines, roadways, and other combustibles as outlined.
  • Favourable weather conditions must be present, wind less than 20km/h, no fog, no air quality alerts and no burn bans
  • Non‑recreational burning is permitted sunrise to sunset only and must be supervised at all times.
  • Fires must not create excessive smoke or impact neighbours or visibility.

Failure to comply with the Open Air Burn By‑Law or permit conditions could result in enforcement action, including fines or recovery of fire response costs.
