Ontario’s Mobile Live Fire Training Unit arrives in Haldimand for week-long firefighter training

More than 100 Haldimand firefighters will take part in advanced training exercises from June 24 to 29, as one of Ontario’s world-class Mobile Live Fire Training Units (MLFTUs) arrives in Cayuga.

This state-of-the-art, propane-fueled simulator provides a unique opportunity for Haldimand firefighters to train in realistic fire conditions, focusing on three scenarios: exterior to interior fire attacks, basement fires, and firefighter rescue.

“This training initiative directly supports our strategic commitment to building healthy and safe communities,” remarked CAO Cathy Case. “By strengthening our firefighters’ readiness through realistic, hands-on training, we’re enhancing public safety and ensuring a more resilient Haldimand County.”

Participants will face real flames, heat, and limited visibility created by theatrical smoke, simulating the high-stress conditions of actual emergencies. The unit’s modular design allows for customizable layouts and includes training props—such as a stove or couch—that emit controllable, propane-fueled flames.

“Providing our firefighters with live fire experience in a controlled environment is essential to building the skills they need to respond effectively in real emergencies,” said Haldimand Fire Chief Jason Gallagher. “This training not only supports their safety but also strengthens our ability to protect the community when it matters most.”

Developed to meet the evolving needs of fire departments across Ontario, the MLFTUs are fully funded by the provincial government and provided at no cost to participating municipalities. Currently, there are two mobile units serving the northern and southern regions of the province, with plans to expand the fleet to four.

Due to high demand, Haldimand secured the unit through a successful application to the Ontario Fire Marshal earlier this year. Training will be held at the South Cayuga Fire Station, and residents in the area may notice visible smoke during the exercises.
