November at the Library: crafts, movies, games and more
From creative workshops and family activities to film screenings and crafting programs, there’s plenty happening at Haldimand County Public Library this November.
Residents of all ages are invited to explore new interests, connect with others, and enjoy a variety of affordable and free programs offered across library branches throughout the month.
Create, craft and connect
Adults looking to get creative can take part in several hands-on programming opportunities this November.
The Library’s popular Crafternoons series returns with a seasonal Light-Up Gnome project. For just $2 per person, participants can create a take-home craft while enjoying an afternoon of creativity and conversation. The session will be held the week of November 23 at multiple branches. Advance registration is required.
Those who enjoy fibre arts can also drop into the Crochet Workshop and Social at the Caledonia Branch every Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Open to all skill levels, the free program offers dedicated time to work on crochet or knitting projects and connect with fellow crafters, with guidance available for those looking to build their skills.
For a special crafting experience, the Friends of the Caledonia Library will host a Winter Sip & Paint fundraiser on November 28 from 10 a.m. to Noon. Participants aged 16 and older will create a rustic snowman décor piece with step-by-step instruction provided. Those interested can register at the Caledonia Branch or by emailing the Friends of the Caledonia Library at caledoniafol@gmail.com. The cost is $50 per person, and registration closes November 23.
For kids and families
Families will find plenty of opportunities for children to stay engaged and creative this month.
Throughout November, dinosaur enthusiasts of all ages can participate in DINOvember Bingo, a free, month-long challenge available at all library branches. Players can collect dinosaur images through social media posts or in-branch visits and earn a themed prize once they complete a bingo.
Children ages 7 to 10 can also put their skills to the test in the Beyblade Arena program at the Dunnville Branch, featuring friendly competition and battling action. Spaces are limited, and registration is required.
Youth in grades 3 to 7 looking to learn chess (or hone their skills) can try the new Youth Chess Club at the Caledonia branch on Wednesdays, starting November 4 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Registration is preferred to guarantee your spot. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult who remains in the library during the program.
For the P.A. Day on November 20, children ages 5 and up can enjoy a "splatter" story and art craft at the Dunnville Branch, while children ages 3 and up can create a scarecrow craft at the Cayuga Branch or a snowflake tinker tray craft at the Jarvis Branch. Programs are $2 per child, and advance registration is required.
Homeschool families can join the Homeschool Crafting Club at the Dunnville Branch on November 30. Designed for children aged 4 to 12, the program encourages creativity, skill building, and social connection through guided crafting activities. The cost is $2, with registration required.
New film program for adults
The Library is also launching a new daytime film series, The Overdue Cinema Club.
The free program invites adults to gather and enjoy documentary and feature film screenings at their local branch. November’s feature is “Milano: The Inside Story of Italian Fashion,” an exploration of Italy’s global influence on the fashion industry. Screenings will take place throughout the month in Caledonia, Cayuga and Hagersville. No registration is required.
Looking ahead to winter break
Planning for the holiday season? The Library’s Winter Break program schedule will be available beginning November 20, with registration opening December 7. Families can look forward to seasonal celebrations, LEGO activities, crafts, StoryTimes, and more during the school break.
