Ice-breaking operations underway in Port Maitland

Haldimand County is taking proactive action to address significant ice build-up along the Grand River, particularly at the mouth in Port Maitland and extending into Lake Erie. To help reduce congestion and mitigate potential flooding risks, ice‑breaking operations will take place as conditions allow.

A tug vessel is currently on-site in Port Maitland, operating based on river and weather conditions. These efforts support ongoing monitoring and help maintain safe water flow during this period of heavy ice accumulation.

Residents are reminded to exercise caution near the river and shoreline areas. Ice conditions can be unpredictable, especially when equipment is operating nearby. Please stay well back from riverbanks and the Port Maitland Pier, and keep children and pets at a safe distance at all times.
