Haldimand introduces Home Flood Protection Program

Haldimand County has introduced a Home Flood Protection Program in response to the increased frequency and severity of flash flooding events driven by climate change.

The Council-approved program is focused on increasing homeowner awareness and information regarding flood prevention. It was developed with feedback collected from residents impacted by home flooding events and extensive research of flood mitigation best practices.

The program provides eligible property owners with an assessment of their home conducted by a third-party consultant. The assessment involves a detailed analysis of the home – inside and outside – and provides recommendations to reduce the risk of losing valuables or damage to your home should another significant rainfall event occur.

Through its initial intake, Haldimand will be able to fund approximately 60 home assessments to be completed with a 50% cost share between the homeowner and Haldimand. For a 90-minute on-site assessment, the cost is $550 plus HST. For a remote assessment, the cost is $475 plus HST. Eligible homeowners will only need to pay for 50% of these costs, with Haldimand covering the other half.

To be eligible, the home must have a connection to municipal sanitary and/or storm collection system and have no outstanding taxes, fines or fees.

Interested homeowners are encouraged to complete the online application form at www.haldimandcounty.ca/floodprotection. For additional information about the program, contact Engineering & Capital Works at 905-318-5932 or engineering@haldimandcounty.on.ca.
