City of Hamilton water system repairs to impact Caledonia residents Saturday

The City of Hamilton, which supplies potable water to Caledonia, Cayuga and York, has advised Haldimand staff of a water main leak impacting a portion of their water distribution system on Hwy 6. Due to the nature of the leak and mindful of the freezing risks associated with dropping temperatures, the City of Hamilton must perform immediate repairs, which will impact water users in Caledonia and potentially Cayuga and York.

The work is expected to begin at 1 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, and there will be a significant drop in water pressure for urban residential water users while repairs are underway. Repairs are expected to continue into the early morning hours, and residents should plan accordingly. Storing a supply of water for non-potable use (i.e. for flushing toilets, washing hands) is recommended.

An update will be shared on the Haldimand County website/social media channels once the work is complete, or if the disruption is expected to be prolonged and extend to Cayuga and York.

Any time water is restored after a shutoff, residents are encouraged to:

  • Confirm all taps are in the off position before water is turned back on
  • Remove aerators (screens) from taps
  • Run the laundry tub tap (or the tap closest to your water meter) for 10 minutes
  • Run each cold-water tap for 5 minutes (observing air or dirty water for a few minutes is normal)
  • Replace aerators on taps

Area school administrators and facility operators should pay special attention to their routine flushing once water has been restored.

Staff recognize this work will be disruptive and remain in close contact with the City of Hamilton, so updates can be provided.

Should the water service disruption be prolonged, Haldimand is prepared to activate its Emergency Operations Centre and implement contingency plans.
