City of Hamilton water line repairs complete, significant water disruption avoided for Caledonia

The City of Hamilton has completed repairs on the water line supplying potable water to Caledonia, Cayuga and York. Essential repairs were completed overnight and residents should not experience any further disruption.

Residents on this water system may experience discoloured water or air when running their taps for the first few minutes after water service has been restored, which is completely normal.

Unless otherwise advised by public health, any time water is restored after a shutoff, residents are encouraged to:

  • Confirm all taps are in the off position before water is turned back on

  • Remove aerators (screens) from taps

  • Run the laundry tub tap (or the tap closest to your water meter) for 10 minutes

  • Run each cold-water tap for 5 minutes (observing air or dirty water for a few minutes is normal)

  • Replace aerators on taps

Area school administrators and facility operators should pay special attention to their routine flushing once water has been restored.

“We appreciate the City of Hamilton’s diligence in completing these repairs and minimizing disruption to residents,” noted Dan McKinnon, Haldimand County’s General Manager, Public Works Operations. “Repairs like these are extremely challenging and require extensive coordination across agencies to restore service safely,” he added.

“Thanks to the City of Hamilton crews who worked through the night in freezing, wet conditions, Caledonia residents woke up with water flowing. Their hard work, and the collaboration of Haldimand County staff and Grand Erie Public Health, along with hours of behind-the-scenes emergency management planning and preparation, made this possible,” added Haldimand County Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley.

While water service disruptions are uncommon, being prepared is always best. Having a 72-hour emergency kit on hand and extra supply of potable water are some proactive measures residents can take.
