Richardson's Farm and Market

When Haldimand County launched the Rural Business and Tourism Community Improvement Plan (RBTCIP) in 2013, the goal was clear: help rural businesses overcome the financial barriers to growth and encourage investments that would strengthen the local economy. 

Richardson's Farm & Market was the first business to receive funding through the Rural Business and Tourism Community Improvement Plan, setting the stage for future investments in Haldimand County's rural economy. 

Already well known for its on-farm market and seasonal attractions, Richardson's Farm established itself as one of Haldimand County's leading examples of value-added agriculture. As the business continued to grow, so did the need for additional space to support its expanding operations. 

To meet this demand, the owners planned a 12 x 12 meter addition to their existing market building. The expansion would create dedicated space for cleaning, grading, processing, and storing vegetables grown on the farm before they were sold at the on-farm market and at farmers' markets throughout Haldimand County and beyond. Moving these activities into a purpose-built space would improve workflow, increase storage capacity, and free up valuable floor space within the market to better showcase local products for customers. 

Like many rural businesses, however, the cost of expansion represented a significant investment. 

Through the Rural Business and Tourism Community Improvement Plan, Haldimand County provided $26,434 in financial incentives to help make the project possible. The funding included a Building Restoration, Renovation and Improvement Grant, along with support for eligible development charges, planning fees, and building permit fees. 

The County's investment helped leveraged a $57,000 private construction project, giving the business the confidence to move forward with an expansion that would improve both its operations and the visitor experience. 

The project delivered benefits that extended well beyond the new addition. By creating dedicated processing and storage areas, Richardson's Farm was able to streamline day-to-day operations, improve efficiency, and increase retail display space within the market. These improvements strengthened the business's ability to grow while continuing to provide high-quality local products and experiences that attract residents and visitors alike. 

Just as importantly, the project demonstrated the purpose and potential of the Rural Business and Tourism Community Improvement Plan. 

Richardson's Farm & Market wasn't simply expanding a building - it was investing in the future of its business, creating opportunities to diversify agricultural operations, enhance agritourism experiences, and contribute to Haldimand County's rural economy. The RBTCIP helped bridge the gap between a vision for growth and the ability to make that vision a reality.
