Project Lifesaver

A partnership between Haldimand County and Haldimand OPP, Project Lifesaver is a new tool added to our emergency response system to help protect individuals who are at risk of wandering due to cognitive conditions such as Alzheimer’s, autism, or dementia.

How it works

Project Lifesaver is an internationally recognized program that works alongside our existing search and rescue protocols, enhancing our ability to locate missing individuals more quickly through the use of wearable technology.

Program participants wear a small, trackable device that emits a unique radio frequency. If a participant goes missing, trained responders use specialized equipment to locate them quickly and safely—often reducing search times by up to 95%.

Who it's for

Project Lifesaver is designed to support:

  • Individuals living with cognitive conditions who may be prone to wandering
  • Caregivers and families seeking added peace of mind
  • Community members and service providers looking for safety solutions

If you're caring for someone who may be at risk, the program can offer an added layer of protection.

How to enroll

Enrollment in Project Lifesaver must be completed by a caregiver who will serve as the primary contact and support person throughout the participant's involvement in the program.

Caregiver responsibilities

  • Gathering all necessary information about the participant, including:
    • Participant history and documentation
    • Contact information
    • Behavioural and wandering history
  • Completing the Project Lifesaver Intake Application
  • Ensuring the participant wears and maintains the device properly
  • Maintaining regular communication with program staff as needed
