Property Standards & Clean Yard

Haldimand County regulates property maintenance throughout the year through the following Bylaws and Acts:

Property Standards Bylaw 730/06

  • Maintenance of all exterior walls, roofs and foundations, structural, heating, electrical, plumbing, interior structure and floors, doors and windows, stairs and railings, porches, fences and barriers
  • Occupancy standards, temperature and cleanliness of buildings
  • Maintenance of sewage and drainage
  • Vacant or damaged buildings
  • Removal of waste, rubbish and debris

Clean Yard Bylaw 731/06

  • Maintenance of yards by owners and occupants
  • Prohibiting the keeping of domestic and industrial waste on lands
  • Prohibiting littering on public and private land
  • Regulating the salvage of motor vehicles and their components with the intent of promoting proper recycling and reuse of resources, the limiting of waste and wasteful practices, the limiting or eliminating of nuisances particularly from waste and naturalized areas to other properties in the municipality, and the limiting and eliminating of other unhealthy practices and conditions arising from litter, refuse or neglect
  • Grass more than 8 inches in height

Weed Control Act

  • Reduce the impact of noxious weeds on the industries of agriculture and horticulture
  • Generally excludes lawns, gardens and private areas for personal enjoyment and leisure
  • Dandelions and goldenrod are not categorized as noxious weeds
  • Some common noxious weeds include: ragweed, poison ivy, milk weed, goat’s beard, thistles, wild carrot, giant hogweed (for a complete listing of noxious weeds. please refer to the Weed Control Act Regulations)

Zoning Bylaws

Haldimand County has three separate Zoning Bylaws: Haldimand, Dunnville and Nanticoke. Each is unique to the area to which it pertains. Common matters regulated by zoning by-laws include, but are not limited to:

  • Permitted uses on a property
  • Livestock on residential property
  • Recreational vehicles parking in residential zones
  • Home industry/occupations
  • Building property setback requirements
